NatHERS thermal modelling for coastal duplex with high glazing design.
Location: La Perouse, Sydney NSW
Project Type: Duplex Residential Development
Design Feature: High Glazing Ratio (approx. 60%)
Overview
This duplex project located in the coastal suburb of La Perouse in Sydney presented a challenging architectural design due to its large glazing areas and open living spaces designed to maximise natural light and ocean views.
Project Description
Homes with high glazing percentages can experience significant heat gain during summer and heat loss during winter, making energy compliance more challenging. The design of this duplex included approximately 60% glazing across multiple façades, which required detailed thermal modelling to ensure strong energy performance.
Our team conducted a full NatHERS assessment, analysing solar heat gain, shading conditions, insulation levels, and glazing performance. Through careful optimisation of the building envelope and window specifications, we were able to improve the thermal performance of the building while maintaining the architect’s design vision.
The final result demonstrated that even architecturally ambitious homes with large glazing areas can achieve strong sustainability outcomes when supported by accurate energy modelling.
